Stave’s Brewery

Hi All – Hope you enjoyed the gig at Stave’s Brewery on Saturday – we certainly did!  It was good to get out and gig again, and its even better when you get to see good friends in the crowd – so a huge thanks to everyone who came along to support us!  Those who are regulars will have noticed we had a different bass player for this one – Rohan had contractual obligations and couldn’t make it, but our friendly sound-man Shaggy agreed to help us out with the bottom end. He was playing drums with The Old Brown Boot Band after us anyway, so he was already going to be at the gig… Yes, not only a sound man, but a bass player and drummer as well (and a recording engineer) – how can one man have so much talent?

And how good were The Old Brown Boot Band? A bit different to us, playing some originals as well as some different covers – like ‘Everything is broken’, a Bob Dylan song I’d never heard before, but have googled after hearing their version. It’s definitely good to get out and hear what other bands are doing!

So, thanks again for supporting us – we really appreciate it!  And thanks to The Old Brown Boot Band for the spot on the bill.  Finally, thanks to Stave’s Brewery for supporting live music, and providing a place for people to play -keep it up guys, you’re doing a good thing!

Surprise!

We had what can only be called a Surprise Gig on Thursday night (17/11/16)! Our good friend and frequent sound-man, Shaggy, was playing with a band at the Hideaway Bar at Enmore, and their support band had to pull out at the last minute – so, wheels were put in motion through the magic of facebook and the internet, and next thing we knew we were on the bill! It was definitely a surprise when Simon rang at about 11:30 on Thursday morning to tell us we had a gig that night in Enmore – if we weren’t doing anything else, that is…

A quick set list was drawn up – we hadn’t gigged for a little while and had been focussing on learning a few new songs, some of which are really promising but really not gig-ready yet. So it was a matter of choosing stuff from our older favourites and hoping we weren’t too rusty – there was no time to brush anything up!

How did it go? Pretty well, we thought!  The crowd seemed to like what we did, and we were having a good time too – playing live is always fun (once you get over any initial butterflies, in my case!), and a bit of encouragement from the crowd goes a long way, so if YOU were there, Thanks very much!

We stayed on to hear Shaggy and “The Old Brown Boot Band“, and were glad we did. These guys were good – great sound and song selection. They seamlessly mixed in a few originals with some good covers – a bit more on the bluesier side, which is never a bad thing for mine. Keep your eye out for them, and as they say, “don’t miss them if you get the chance”. We wouldn’t mind playing more gigs with them either! (Thanks to the guys for giving us this particular opportunity anyway.)

Sorry we didn’t get the word out very well for this gig – it really was short notice given we were all at our day jobs when the news broke!  We’ll try better next time, promise!

In Denial at The Basement!

The Big Gig!

On the 12 of December (2014) we had the great pleasure of playing at The Basement, one of Sydney’s best known music venues. It was an afternoon gig, but that didn’t make it any less of an occasion for us! This is a place we’ve all been to, seeing various international and top local artists! Very up-market indeed.

Once we’d met the sound man and set everything up, it was back to the green room to add our names to the hundreds of others on the walls and ceiling.

Pretty soon it was time to play, but only after our compare, Greg, got the crowd revved up and gave us a rousing introduction – then on we went, following the well trodden corridor from the green room to the stage!

We were playing for a Sydney University end-of-year function, and the crowd were in a great mood from the start. We weren’t the only entertainment there, as the Uni folks had formed a few karoke groups for their own battle-of-the-bands contest, so our sets had to be kept short, but the reception we got for every song was fantastic! Even a temporary mid-set evacuation for a fire alarm couldn’t dampen the mood (though the sprinklers might have, had they gone off!). The karoke groups were great – very funny and very clever, which I suppose is what you’d expect from University people, but they really were very, very good and kept everyone entertained.

Our second set went even better than the first, thankfully sans fire alarm this time, and just when I truly thought we’d finished (and well over the original time estimates on the afternoons running sheet), they wouldn’t let us go without one more! What could we do but oblige, of course! Greg came back to the mic and gave us a heartfelt thankyou, and once again whipped the crowd up into more thunderous applause! What can I say? Did we feel great or what? I felt fantastic! I felt like I was part of some mega-star rock band! I felt like packing in the day job! (But I got better…)

Thanks again to Greg and all the folks at Sydney Uni who gave us this chance to play at such an iconic venue, and for making us feel so good when we did!

Ruby L’Otel 8/11/14

Sorry about the lateness of this post – I was waiting to get some more pictures (we do have 2…) but it looks like they’ve been lost! Doesn’t matter – it was another great gig from all accounts. The stretch limo of party people didn’t turn up this time, but those that were there certainly seemed to have a good time, as did we. The bar staff seemed happy and were even taking photos at one stage – hopefully not for a wanted poster! 🙂 We’ve been invited back again anyway, which is always a good sign!

So, a big THANKYOU as always to those who came along – we really do appreciate the support you folks give us! And keep your eyes peeled for the next date – we’ll put it up as soon as its confirmed.

AND… on Friday 12/12 we did a function at the Basement – yes, the Basement! If you don’t know it don’t worry – suffice to say it attracts international artists, and was a pretty big thing for us, so I’ll be posting something on that one pretty soon – watch this space!

Ruby L’Otel 31/5

We did our first gig at the Ruby (Victoria Rd Rozelle) on Saturday night, 31st of May – and what a night we had!  We had a fantastic turnout from our friends and supporters, creating a great party-like atmosphere!  We in the band certainly had a good time, and the crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves too – plenty of people up and dancing, and plenty more doing some serious toe-tapping from the comfort of their seats. The applause and cheering made us feel pretty special – and when the audience started singing along with some of the songs it was just perfect!

Clearly it was one of those lucky nights when everyone was in the mood for a good time!  Speaking of luck, we were pleasantly surprised when a stretched Hummer (well a stretched something) pulled up outside and disgorged about 20 or more passengers, who then filed into the Ruby for dinner. Many of them came to see what all the noise was later, and joined in on the festivities!

So, a big THANK YOU to all of the people that came out to see us – I hope you had a good time and that we may see you again sometime soon!

(PS – If you want to get an email notice of any upcoming gigs, have a look at our ‘Do you REALLY want to know’ page)

Phil’s Party!

I was looking at photos on my phone and saw some shots from the 50th party gig we did in August – and realised I hadn’t update our site here – oops!  It was a great success and a lot of fun! When we arrived to set up, Phil and Caroline had created a great ‘stage’ area on their deck – a huge black tarp from floor to ceiling covering the back fence created instant atmosphere. Then Phil presented the ‘Ozzy’ rider (from Wayne’s World) – 200 brown MnM’s in a brandy glass! Well, what could we say – In Denial would definitely be going on that night! But there was more – Phil also presented the famous Van Halen rider –  a bowl full of MnM’s with the brown ones removed. This was a gig destined for greatness…

The crowd certainly seemed to enjoy what we did, with the exception of one neighbour (who apparently always complains) who made a bit of a fuss 3 songs in – but he was quickly placated when he was told what was going on (and he had been invited) and didn’t cause any trouble.

Just for something different we opened the 2nd set with Pink Floyd’s ‘Time’, which is a bit different for us, but it actually went down very well and may even become a regular feature! Of course our Angels songs were appreciated as always – they were just so popular in this country!

Caroline’s catering was excellent, and her team of waiters & waitresses did a great job. All in all I think Phil had a great party – we certainly did!  Check out the ‘Have a Look’ pages for some photos…

Still In denial…

Haven’t posted for a while, but we have been let loose from time to time! Last couple of gigs have been private parties, and the next one is too – another 50th! This one’s for a very good friend of ours, so it should be a beauty!  (ps: Just resurrected our facebook page too – we’ll try to keep it more active in future!)

Joe Bonamassa at the State Theatre, 5 October 2012

Hi Everyone – I normally use the ‘reviews’ section to comment on how our own gigs went, but thought I’d tell you about the concert I went to on Friday night. As the title suggests it was Joe Bonamassa at Sydney’s State Theatre, and it was great! This is the third time I’ve seen Joe live now, and I’d certainly go again next time he comes over here. This time Joe opened with a few acoustic numbers, including a great cover of Bad Company’s ‘Seagull’ as well as the title track of his latest album, ‘Driving towards the daylight’. Then as the lights dimmmed a little the rest of the band came out, and when the lights came back up Joe had one of his trademark Les Paus’s in hand, and they kicked off the ‘main’ electric part of the set with ‘Slow Train Coming’. The support had been one-man-band Claude Hay – well worth checking out, by the way – doing some rootsy influenced songs with a slightly acoustic flavour, and Joe’s opening had continued the theme to an extent – so Slow Train Coming was like an explosion!

The band were on top form and just kept it all coming – plenty of great solos from Joe of course, but good tight backing from the other guys all night too. Complaints? Well, being the third time live and after watching plenty of DVD performances, we did notice that some arrangements were slightly shortened – but that did mean more songs could fit into the set list, so you can take that how you want. Joe’s guitar got a bit too loud in a couple of songs for me, almost overpowering the band (and yes, I’m a guitarist!) – but only occasionaly, and predominantly the sound was great!

To wrap it up, it was a great night. A good support act, and a great show by Joe and the band. I happily forked out for (another) t-shirt, plus a DVD! If you ever get the chance to see Joe, my strong advice is to take it – you won’t be sorry.

Mark.

Thanks to The Merton Hotel!

After a good run of gigs at The Merton starting in December last year, it looks like its time to say goodbye. We’d like to thank Aiden for his support of us and live music in general, and thanks to the bar staff for their smiles and assistance. You gave us a good go Aiden, and we appreciate it!

Party Night!! (23rd June)

Well – What a great night we had on Saturday! One of those nights when the crowd was in the mood for good time and hopefully went away well satisfied! It was certainly fun for us – you’ve got to love it when the floor in front of you is full of people dancing and singing the choruses with you. So full in fact that in the second last song someone crashed backwards over a floor wedge and knocked Simon’s mic into his face! Unfazed, Simon just picked up the mic and stand and kept singing, not missing a beat!  –  Rock and Roll, Simon!

For the train-spotters out there, the mic was an SM58, and yes, it remained totally unharmed by the experience… (But Simon will  have a very nice bruise for a few days!)
